On Christmas day, while at lunch at a dear friends house I posed the question, "What has been the best gift you have ever received in your life?"
The answers varied to what the gift was (a watch given to a person by his mother, a phone given to a sister, etc.), but the reason for why that gift was the best was always the same. Being a tangible reminder of the love between the gift giver and the gift receiver.
Claire said it best after our discussion of the BEST gifts in life. "Sarah, you made me realize how much I should be thankful for." Posing that question also allowed me to reflect on what I am thankful for as well.
I'm doing a job that I'm passionate about. I'm on a continent that I have had a pull to since my first trip to South Africa in 2008. I'm in a country that has become home to me. I manage two young women that test me every day, but also bring a smile to my face every time they learn something new or say something random or profound.
I have learned the importance of patience and simplicity. I've learned to trust and fight for what is right. I have also learned that even though I am separated from some of my loved ones that being far away isn't the end of the world (I will be seeing some of them in a few short months). I'm also thankful for the friends and family I have formed here in Uganda.
Thank you to ALL of the supporters of AAD. You all are making dreams a reality!
I hope you all had a chance to be with your loved ones and enjoy this holiday season together!
